The energy efficiency scale
July 04th 2007

The build up of scale deposits and corrosion are both common and costly problems in many industrial processes and commercial buildings using natural water supplies, and have the ability to considerably reduce the efficiency of water heating systems and increase the detrimental impact on the environment

Water treatment specialists at WATERMATIC have developed a range of products designed to save money and energy, without the use of chemicals or harmful waste products. The range includes Commercial Condensafe, which is designed to eliminate the environmental impact of acidic discharges from condensing boilers and water heaters.

Voted one of the top three new products

by the ET Innovation for Technology Awards 2007, Condensafe simply and effectively neutralises the condensate from pH4 to between pH7-8 before releasing it into the drain. Statistics for 2006 indicate some 25,000 commercial condensing boiler installations were added and each of these are contributing between 4,000 – 12,000 litres of condensate into the sewage system each year. By installing a Condensafe unit, the acidic condensate is neutralised, the microorganisms used downstream in the waste water biological purification process are protected, and the potential environmental consequences of condensate avoided.

WATERMATIC also pioneered the development of a 21st century answer to the age old problem of scale deposits and limescale – KALGUARD+ uses a new process and system that treats and reverses limescale issues.

Straightforward to install, KAL-GUARD+ delivers a water treatment process to manage limescale within a system. The unit incorporates a simple to use, yet sophisticated controller to match the level of water treatment to suit the local water hardness conditions, and in independent testing at Cranfield University, has been shown to reduce limescale formation on heating surfaces by up to 80%. Already the product of choice for many of the UK’s largest hotel and leisure groups,KAL-GUARD+ has recently been installed by Virgin Active at its health club in Rugby, where it is undergoing a six-month trial.

“Virgin Active makes a commitment to achieving good environmental practice through the efficient use of energy and water, in particular minimising the waste of these resources wherever possible,” explains Virgin Active’s Northern Region Maintenance Manager,Jason Hicking.“We are trialling KAL-GUARD+ as a possible product to assist us in delivering guaranteed water treatment and greater energy efficiency through gas savings in water heating.” WATERMATIC is the commercial division of specialist water treatment company Salamander (Engineering) Ltd.

KAL-GUARD+ is a registered trademark of WATERMATIC.
