Daikin VRV – a history of world firsts Always innovating, never imitating
July 01st 2008

Space Airconditioning, established in 1980, the largest of Daikin’s European network of independent distributors, reviews the technology used in the latest superior VRV-III (Variable Refrigerant Volume – three) and the energy efficient benefits it offers

VRV History

Daikin pioneered VRV technology in 1982 and introduced its highly advanced VRV direct expansion air conditioning system to the European market place in 1987. Due to their extraordinary operating efficiency and design flexibility,Daikin VRV systems have made savage inroads into the traditional central air conditioning market throughout Europe. Today through Space Air, Daikin offers an extensive range of VRV systems, all operating with the efficient and safe refrigerant R410A.

The VRV System Range

Mini VRV Heat Pump technology (VRVIII-S) Ideal for the home or small commercial applications. Cooling Capacity Modules - 7.1 ~ 15.5 kW Heating Capacity Modules - 12.5 ~ 8.0 kW VRVIII-S connects up to 9 indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Water cooled Heat Pump (VRV-WII) For taller buildings or refurbishment projects.

Cooling Capacity Modules - 26.7, 53.4, 80.1 kW

Heating Capacity Modules - 31.5, 63.0, 94.5 kW

Using water as its heat source, the compact stackable VRV-WII units are mounted internally and connect up to 32 indoor units.Designed to 'tap-in' to existing water-loop to enable individual floors or zones to be conditioned as required. VRV-WII has no limitations on water pipe length.

Latest VRVIII Heat Pump / Heat Recovery

Incorporating features of earlier VRV systems with additional new design features to improve installation, maintenance, capacity and overall performance.

Cooling Capacity - 14.0 ~ 147.0 kW

Heating Capacity - 16.0 ~ 170.0 kW

VRVIII has greater capacity than its predecessor and connects up to 64 indoor fan coil units. Total piping length has been increased from 300m to 1000m and vertical separation between outdoor and indoor units from 50m to 90m. With the exception of VRVIII size 5, any outdoor unit can be combined with any other unit size, maximising choice on system priorities be it efficiencies, footprint or price.VRV-III system flexibility is unparalleled.

Environmental Benefits

An important environmental and installation feature of VRVIII, particularly with the F-gas regulation in mind, is its ability to electronically record the total refrigerant charge during commissioning. Leakage prevention is also further supported by the use of brazed joints in place of flanged and flared connections. Refinements to the system’s purpose designed inverter driven ‘G’type scroll compressor means losses are reduced by a further 2%, this is due to a higher operating speed.Furthermore the innovative method of supplying oil to the scroll by means of differential pressure improves lubrication and unit reliability. These developments enable VRV-III to return maximum COPs at full load.

Control Systems

Compatible with the complete Daikin suite of advanced air conditioning monitoring and control systems (Intelligent Touch Controller, Intelligent Manager, BACnet Gateway and LONWorks Compatible Gateway), the new VRV-III offers high energy saving, precisely controlled and monitored air conditioning solutions. Many Daikin VRV systems qualify for the Energy Technology List on the Enhance Capital Allowance Scheme.
