PICCV. Energy Efficient Valves for today’s green technology
July 01st 2008

When Belimo entered the valve market with the CCV, a new era of valve technology began. Now,Belimo has expanded their valve innovation with the PICCV.This 2-way valve combines the functionality of a control valve and a pressure regulating valve, creating one precise product which is unaffected by pressure variations in a system. This cost effective design provides a constant flow – at each degree of ball opening – giving unparalleled performance in your HVAC system. Simply choose the smallest PICCV that can satisfy the flow rate of your system. No other criteria is needed

The challenge

Energy savings with maximum convenience and low installation cost are requirements for the construction of new building and renovation projects. Selecting the correct components to deliver the desired performance can be quite time consuming. Pressure variations, balancing valves, labour and the cost and inflexibility of reverse return systems can pose energy and installation dilemmas.

The solution

The PICCV combines the functions of balancing valve and control valve which enables it to supply an accurate and stable flow while dynamically balancing the supply based on demand. Where a standard valve is oversized at average to light loads (95-99% of operation time) and may oscillate or hunt, the PICCV control valve has an equal percentage response curve under all conditions which result in a linearised heat output with respect to the control signal.

Balancing is not necessary as the PICCV provides constant flow for each degree of ball opening. Pressure variations are not an issue, as the PICCV acts with an inherent characteristic valve authority of one.

The advantages

An inherent valve authority characteristic of one leaves an equal percentage curve that is not distorted resulting in a desirable linear heat output. Additional piping is not required, saving on installation and rising material cost. Best of all, energy savings are significant, lessening pumping cost and avoidance of energizing additional chillers due to satisfying ΔT.

This solution simplifies valve sizing and design, saves money in balancing and engineering time as well as labour in installation. All the disadvantages of variable flow systems are eliminated to provide the best hydronic solution for most HVAC applications.

Advantages of the PICCV over traditional Globe valves

  • Hydronic balancing is simplified, as the circuits are not interactive
  • Flexible commissioning
  • One piece installation saves 50% of labour costs, installation space and investment for balancing valve
  • Easy selection, no Kv calculation required
  • Desirable ΔT prevents energizing additional chillers
  • Reduces operating costs
  • Prevents overflow or underflow for fast start-up
  • Visualizes flow in a BMS system and provides accurate flow for each degree of opening.
